The massive release of radioactive material at the Chernobyl accident in 1986 led to widespread radiation exposure, in particular to people evacuated from the settlements near the reactor and workers involved in the clean-up operations, and also to several millons living in contaminated regions in Russia, Belorus and Ukraine. This book provides current research on the Chernobyl disaster. Chapter One provides a comparative analysis and evaluation of different types of countermeasures implemented in the aftermath of the accident at Chernobyl. Chapter Two discusses the artistic treatment of Chernobyl where the problem of apophasia arises. Chapter Three reviews the general tendencies of dynamics of frequencies of congenital malformations in the territories polluted by radioactive Chernobyl radionuclides. Chapter Four discusses the impact of low doses of radiation. Chapter Five provides an overview of the increase of non-cancer morbidity on the Chernobyl radioactively contaminated territories. Chapter Six develops a concept of premature aging development in liquidators in the remote period after the Chernobyl disaster. Chapter Seven discusses the long term consequences of atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons and Chernobyl disaster on the territory of South Bohemia in Czech Republic. Chapter Eight studies the stress adaptation of microscopic fungi from around the Chernobyl atomic energy station. Chapter Nine focuses on perspectives of nuclear safety. The final chapter is a short commentary on the radiation and risk of hematological malignancies in the Chernobyl clean-up workers

We entrust readers with thirty fragments of reflections, meditations, recollections, and images - one for each year that has passed since the explosion that rocked and destroyed a part of the Chernobyl nuclear power station in April 1986. The aesthetic visions, thoughts, and experiences that have made their way into this book hover in a grey region between the singular and self-enclosed, on the one hand, and the generally applicable and universal, on the other. Through words and images, we wish to contribute our humble share to a collaborative grappling with the event of Chernobyl. Unthinkable and unrepresentable as it is, we insist on the need to reflect upon, signify, and symbolize it, taking stock of the consciousness it fragmented and, perhaps, cultivating another, more environmentally attuned way of living.

It was at Chernobyl that she met her fiancé, but as she fell in love, the Ukraine collapsed into what would become the Orange Revolution, bringing it to the brink of political disintegration and civil war. Ultimately, this fall of idealism in the East underscores Cengel's own loss of innocence. From Chernobyl with Love is an indelible portrait of this historical epoch and a memoir of the highest order.

It has been twenty-five years now since the accident occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In the early days after the disaster, it was difficult to assume that its aftermath would make itself felt after a quarter of a century. Numerous studies in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia have shown that the morbidity of a number of diseases among the exposed population, liquidators and children residing in the contaminated areas has increased several times after the accident. Particular attention is drawn to health conditions of the children who were exposed to radiation and the children of liquidators who also demonstrate ill health. This book examines the need for further development of radiobiological and radioecological research, increase in the availability of methods, development of novel theoretical risk models and new approaches to investigating into the complex processes that occur at present and are expected in the future.

She tracks the emergence of a "biological citizenship" in which assaults on health become the coinage through which sufferers stake claims for biomedical resources, social equity, and human rights. "Life Exposed" provides an anthropological framework for understanding the politics of emergent democracies, the nature of citizenship claims, and everyday forms of survival as they are interwoven with the profound changes that accompanied the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Dear Comrades! Since the accident at the Chernobyl power plant, there has been a detailed analysis of the radioactivity of the food and territory of your population point. The results show that living and working in your village will cause no harm to adults or children. So began a pamphlet issued by the Ukrainian Ministry of Health--which, despite its optimistic beginnings, went on to warn its readers against consuming local milk, berries, or mushrooms, or going into the surrounding forest.
