Choosing a research topic is often a challenge. Here are a few tips to get you started:
-
Select a topic that's relevant to you! This is the most important tip since your interest in the topic will make the research more engaging, productive and relevant.
-
Narrow your topic to something manageable! If your topic is too broad, you'll find too much information and your research will be left without direction.
-
Review your assignment guidelines and make sure your topic aligns with it.
-
Refer to your lecture notes and required readings to refresh your understanding of the course and the assignment.
Consider the 5 W questions:
-
WHO is most affected by the topic? Who provides information/analysis on the topic? Who is affiliated with the topic most?
-
WHAT are the major questions surrounding the topic? Is there any debate about the topic? is their a range of viewpoints and issues to consider?
-
WHEN has your topic been the most important? Is it a contemporary topic or a historical one? Can you compare your topic as it evolved over time?
-
WHERE is your topic important (international, national, local)? Are there certain places or societies affected by your topic?
-
WHY did you choose the topic? What most interests you about the topic? Do you have a viewpoint you can offer on the issues involved?
